Chapter 8

At the end of that whole nightmare that took place in my living room, I was left wondering if Grace just enjoyed lying to me instead of it being a chronic condition. It was a very civil conversation she had with my family and there was only one thing that stood out to me. When my mother mentioned the Sutterheim Hotel, she did not tell her that her father was the owner or the story behind it. Why wouldn’t she do that? Was she lying about it? Then how did she not pay for dinner at the hotel’s restaurant and how did she get a suite in such a famous hotel which would naturally have the suites booked out, and how was she able to ask for my car to be ready and they did it without hearing from me? Did she do those things as a guest? I had so many questions and I would get the answers for them all as soon as I was far away from my house and the people who were still in it.

I had sat and waited patiently as the family threw themselves at Grace’s feet. They were mesmerized by her as most people were because she was charming and confident and stunningly beautiful, and my mother was already seeing the beautiful babies we would have together. I felt so bad for them that they forced their way in and found a glimmer of hope that would not be coming true. I would take no responsibility for their heartbreaks because I made myself very clear. I was on my way to Grace’s house to drop her off and turn the car right around. She was quiet beside me and I knew she wasn’t happy that she didn’t get to spend a longer time at my house. She didn’t even get to see my bedroom where I was sure she would have tried to fuck me.

“Are you okay?” I asked as I came to a light.

“No.”

“What’s wrong?”

“I wasn’t finished talking with your family,” she said.

“I sat there for an hour while you people rambled along.”

“I didn’t get to see your bedroom and the rest of the house,” she said.

“But you’ll get another chance to come back.”

“When?” she asked, and she was so sad that I wanted to hug her.

“When do you want?” I asked and she smiled a little.

“Tomorrow. For dinner,” she said.

“Then you and I will have dinner together tomorrow,” I said and she smiled. “We’re sex partners and we will be spending a lot of time together.”

“I would like that.”

“Are you going to your office tomorrow?” I asked.

“I’m not a doctor, Leanne. I already told you.”

“I’m talking about at your father’s head office.”

“Um…no. I have a lunch date tomorrow,” she said.

“Business lunch date?”

“No. With someone. You said we could both see other people, right?”

“Of course. Who’s she?” I asked and swallowed hard.

“Someone I met on a business trip with my dad. She has been asking me out to lunch but I kept putting her off.
